Stockport’s vision for a brighter, more vibrant future is gradually coming to life. The town is currently undergoing a £1 billion transformation program, with plans to roll out a strategic regeneration framework for a whopping 280 acres located east of the town centre. This remarkable project, known as the Town Centre East Strategic Regeneration Framework (SRF), aims to erect 4,000 new homes in Stockport.
The Stockport Council is no stranger to leading such monumental initiatives. Since 2019, they have been steering a successful 130-acre regeneration initiative in Town Centre West. This project has been instrumental in reviving the town’s charm and vitality and has set the stage for the forthcoming Town Centre East SRF.
As Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, succinctly put it, “The progress we have made has been incredible and continues at pace.” The launch of the Town Centre East opportunity signifies the next phase in their journey towards transforming Stockport into a haven for homeowners.
With several thousand new homes already created and many more on the way, coupled with the unveiling of the new Interchange and town centre park for residents’ enjoyment, Stockport’s potential is evident. The Town Centre West redevelopment is testament to this fact, boasting landmark projects like Capital&Centric’s Weir Mill, the expansive 170,000 sq ft Stockport Exchange office development, and Stockport 8 – a substantial 1,200-home scheme delivered by ECF.
Envisioned as an ambitious project aimed at amplifying town centre living on a grand scale, the Town Centre East masterplan occupies an area more than twice the size of Town Centre West. Its expanse stretches eastwards from Wellington Road North to St Mary’s Way and northwards from Hempshaw Lane to the M60.
The Stockport Council’s vision for Town Centre East revolves around creating a sustainable, affordable, and accessible living environment. According to interim chair of Stockport MDC, Eamonn Boylan, “This latest phase of regeneration will build on the success of Town Centre West. In the five years since our founding, we’ve delivered 1,200 homes with a further 1,500 in the pipeline, attracted £600m of private investment and opened a brand-new transport interchange and created a brand new two-acre park.”
As Stockport Council prepares to invite proposals from teams of experienced consultants by 23 August, one thing is certain: Stockport is on an exciting trajectory towards a prosperous future. Through strategic planning and smart execution, they are not only reshaping the town’s skyline but also enhancing its potential for growth and development. The Town Centre East regeneration opportunity is but another testament to Stockport’s commitment towards progress.
