The Stockport Schools Brass Band (SSBB) has been an integral part of the Stockport community since its inception in 1978. Originating from the Stockport Schools Music Teachers Association, SSBB has grown into a well-respected institution, nurturing young musical talent and fostering a sense of community. With a rich history and a commitment to inclusivity, SSBB provides opportunities for players of all levels to excel in music while making lifelong friends.

The Origins of Stockport Schools’ Brass Band

The story of SSBB begins with Ken Thomas, a newly appointed music teacher in Stockport, who was tasked with creating a central brass band. Ken’s dedication and vision led him to canvass opinions, visit schools, and send out invitations. His hard work culminated in auditions at Stockport College in the summer of 1978, where the overwhelming response led to the formation of two bands. The inaugural concert took place that same weekend, marking the beginning of a long and successful journey.

Evolution and Expansion

Over the years, SSBB has evolved to include multiple bands catering to different skill levels. Initially, there were the Prep Band and Senior Band. Mike Greaves took charge of the Prep Band, while Bob Wyatt led the Senior Band for 17 years before passing the baton to Colin Duxbury in 1995. The administration of this growing organization required significant effort, leading to the formation of a dedicated committee with Ken Thomas at its helm.

Key figures like Cliff Colwell, Helen Coll, and Gill Scourfield played crucial roles in the early years. Helen managed administrative tasks before Gill took over for an impressive 20 years. During this time, Gill secured a grant from Littlewoods, enabling the launch of an “open” Saturday morning session for beginners. This initiative gave birth to the Junior Band and saw the Prep Band renamed as the Intermediate Band.
